Ceramic coating locks in whatever finish is underneath it — including imperfections. Here are 5 signs your vehicle needs paint correction before you apply ceramic coating.

Applying ceramic coating over imperfect paint is like putting a glass cover over a scratched table — it doesn't hide the damage, it preserves it. That's why paint correction before ceramic coating is one of the most important steps in the protection process. Here are 5 signs your vehicle needs paint correction before any coating is applied.

Why Paint Correction Matters

Ceramic coating chemically bonds with your vehicle's clear coat, creating a hard, glossy, protective layer. But that layer is transparent — it magnifies and locks in whatever's underneath. If your paint has swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, or water spots, the ceramic coating will seal those imperfections in place for the life of the coating.

Paint correction is the process of machine-polishing the paint to remove these imperfections, creating a flawless surface for the ceramic coating to bond to. Skipping this step is the most common mistake vehicle owners make when pursuing ceramic coating.

Sign 1: Visible Swirl Marks in Sunlight

Swirl marks are the most common paint imperfection, and they're usually caused by improper washing techniques — think automatic car washes with dirty brushes, or wiping the car with a dry or dirty towel. Under direct sunlight or bright LED lighting, these marks appear as a spiderweb pattern of fine scratches across the paint surface.

If you see swirl marks, paint correction before ceramic coating is essential. The ceramic coating won't fill or hide them — it will make them more visible by adding gloss and depth. A professional multi-stage paint correction can remove these marks entirely, leaving a flawless mirror finish.

Sign 2: Water Spots That Won't Wash Off

Water spots occur when mineral-rich water (hard water, rain, or sprinkler water) dries on your paint surface, leaving behind mineral deposits. Over time, these deposits can etch into the clear coat, creating permanent marks that no amount of washing will remove.

There are two types of water spots:

  • Surface water spots — sit on top of the clear coat, can be removed with chemical decontamination
  • Etched water spots — have eaten into the clear coat, require paint correction to remove

If you can feel the water spots with your fingernail, they're etched and need machine polishing to resolve. Applying ceramic coating over etched water spots will lock them in permanently.

Sign 3: Dull, Hazy, or Oxidized Paint

If your vehicle's paint looks dull, cloudy, or hazy — especially on horizontal surfaces like the hood, roof, and trunk — you're likely dealing with oxidation. UV rays from the sun break down the clear coat over time, causing it to lose its clarity and depth.

Oxidation is particularly common on:

  • Vehicles that are parked outdoors daily
  • Cars that are 5+ years old without regular wax or coating
  • Vehicles in dark colors, which absorb more UV heat

Paint correction removes the oxidized layer of clear coat, restoring the depth, clarity, and gloss of the finish. This is a critical step before ceramic coating, as the coating needs a healthy clear coat to bond with.

Sign 4: Visible Scratches in the Clear Coat

Not all scratches require paint correction — some are superficial enough that a ceramic coating will mask them. But if you can see scratches that catch light or feel them with your fingernail, they're too deep for coating alone to address.

A fingernail test is simple: gently drag your fingernail across the scratch. If your nail catches, the scratch is in the clear coat and needs correction. If your nail slides over it smoothly, it may be shallow enough for coating to fill.

RoadHue's paint correction service uses multiple grades of polish and pad combinations to safely remove clear coat scratches without compromising the paint's integrity.

Sign 5: Previous Poor-Quality Detailing or Buffing

If your vehicle has been through a poor-quality detail or amateur buffing job, the paint may have holograms, buffer trails, or uneven polishing marks. These appear as streaky, inconsistent reflections visible under LED lights or sunlight.

Unfortunately, bad detailing happens often — especially at car washes or with inexperienced detailers who use aggressive compounds without proper technique. The good news is that proper paint correction can remove these marks and restore a uniform finish.

If your vehicle has been previously detailed by someone other than a professional, it's worth having the paint assessed before ceramic coating. Holograms and buffer trails will be locked in and magnified under a ceramic coating.

RoadHue's Paint Correction Process

At RoadHue, paint correction is included with our Shield Pro and Shield Elite ceramic coating packages. Our process includes:

  1. Assessment — inspecting the paint under proper LED lighting to identify all imperfections
  2. Decontamination — clay bar and chemical decontamination to remove bonded contaminants
  3. Machine polishing — multi-stage polishing to remove swirls, scratches, and oxidation
  4. Final inspection — ensuring a flawless finish before ceramic coating application

This is why our Shield Pro and Elite tiers deliver such dramatically better results than entry-level coatings — the paint correction step creates the perfect canvas for the ceramic coating to bond to.
